Professor Winterbottom has led domestic and international exploratory building programs since 1994. His projects support those coping with trauma, displacement, incarceration, and poverty. He writes and lectures on exploratory building and leads workshops facilitating the process. He received EDRA’s Great Places Award in 2010 and 2019, numerous ASLA Awards and was inducted as an ASLA Fellow in 2011. His book “Design-Build, Integrating Craft, Service, and Research through applied Academic and Practice Models” was released by Routledge, Spring 2020 and co-authored “Healing Gardens” by Timber Press in 2015. In 2021, he was the only American of 4 awardees to receive an Urban Sketchers Reportage Grant for 2021 for his project “The Shifting Landscapes of Despair, Hope, Survival and Persistence”.
