GRUNER&FRIENDS

GRUNER&FRIENDS is one of the innovative architecture firms in Basel, combining the architectural tradition of their hometown with modern design approaches and a clear focus on sustainability since 2017. Led by Patrice Gruner, the office develops solutions that are both ecologically and socially future-proof. An interesting example of their approach is the redesign of the Dreirosenbrücke, which is proposed to be equipped with a low-energy and sustainably designed timber pergola that functions as a shading element and rain shelter. This transforms the bridge into a more livable public space, improving the area microclimate and creating a green oasis in the city. Even while designing small projects as the Lago 105 Bar in the Main Post Building Passage, GRUNER&FRIENDS demonstrate their creative approach. The bar was designed aiming for a sustainable outcome, by an easy-to-adapt product and the use of high-quality materials that last longer. This provided Basel residents with a refreshing break since the summer of 2022. Sustainability is at the heart of their work. By re-thinking processes and program, studying the building or product life-cycle, using resource-efficient materials and integrating vegetation, they contribute to further developing Basel as a green and livable city.
