JJRR/ARQUITECTURA – Listen to the Site, its Context and to Time; They will tell you what to do

JJRR/ARQUITECTURA, established by architect José Juan Rivera Río in Mexico City, prioritizes durable materials, embracing their evolving beauty with time. The team creates open, versatile spaces in harmony with nature, seamlessly merging interiors and exteriors.

JJRR/ARQUITECTURA, is a studio based in Mexico City, founded in 2013 by architect José Juan Rivera Río. The studio works widely on projects around the Mexican Republic, Europe and USA. José Juan Rivera Río and his team enjoy using durable materials, where they believe their beauty gets better over time by acquiring patina. In a natural environment, the built environment transforms and becomes an open versatile space allowing the interiors to blend with the exteriors.

Architecture can be felt, seen, breathed and touched, it speaks by itself.

JJRR/ARQUITECTURA’s works are characterized for being timeless architecture; an architecture that respects what is happening around and pays extra care to the environment.

ECC Team caught up with founder and architect José Juan Rivera Río to find out more about his values as an architect. Here are some highlights:

What is your link with Mexico and how does this influence your work? “I was born in Mexico and currently live in Mexico City. The influence of modern Mexican architecture is always present, the great masters of modern Mexican architecture and also young architects are largely those who instill in me knowledge, skills and motivation“, says José.

“Mexico is going through a period of great architectural talent and there is more and more interest in architecture. The identity of each architect and his roots are fundamental for me.

What do you think is the role of the architect nowadays? José mentioned that architects play a very important role in creating awareness, considering and analyzing the environment, studying all the urban, social, climatic problems, the site, as well as considering clean energy. He continued by saying that architecture nowadays should have a solid foundation reflecting the proper culture, proportion, scale, context portraying the function with form and its context). These are the fundamental aspects he believes are the basis for long lasting architecture.

Where do you take inspiration from? Inspiration comes mainly from the site, from its views and landscapes, from the light, the topographic lines…we believe in which site it speaks and tells you what to do.” José adds that the talks with the client and understanding their needs and aspirations, also play an important role in the architectural design.
