Out Side In: Exploring the boundaries of spatiality through photography

On the occasion of the Time Space Existence closing event, which took place on the 26th of November in Venice, the European Cultural Centre presented Out Side In, a limited-edition photobook. It is the second publication of the series imagined by ECC, following the release in 2021 of N-D, Narrative Dimension.

The series was born to shed light on the works of the photographers exhibiting in the ECC’s biennial architecture exhibitions, while at the same time to question the place of photography in the architectural field.

The current volume – Out Side In – aims to challenge established perceptions of spatial boundaries through the artistry of architectural photography. The book is published by Urbanautica Books and released in partnership with World-Architects. It features an essay by Spyros Papapetros – Associate Professor of History and Theory of Architecture at the Princeton University School of Architecture – in the role of guest editor. With his contribution, Papapetros adds a reading level to the contents of the book, including a reflection on the spaciality in our daily lives.

Through the photographic lens of the photographers who participated in the 2023 Time Space Existence exhibition, the publication unveils the intricate interplay between ‘in’ and ‘out’, blurring boundaries and transforming our comprehension of spatial constructs.

At the heart of Out Side In lies a profound reimagining of the conventional distinctions between ‘outside’ and ‘inside’. Rather than delineating fixed realms, this publication delves into the inherent fluidity of these spaces, presenting a narrative journey through the lens of the photographers that seamlessly traverses from the farthest exterior reaches to the innermost sanctums. It is not a linear progression but a deliberate disruption, inviting readers to reconsider their comprehension of spatial dichotomies.

The book invites exploration of multidimensional spaces, redefining our relationship with architectural spatiality while it prompts introspection, urging a reconsideration of our spatial position and active viewer roles. It unveils the complexity of ‘in’ within ‘out,’ and vice versa, blurring boundaries and reshaping spatial understanding.

Just as in the precedent publication, a key role is played by the reader, who can investigate, reflect, and reconsider his/her/their perception of the concepts of outside and inside.
Out Side In embodies photography’s transformative power, reimagining space and perception within architectural confines.

The participating photographers are Giacomo Albo, Elisif Brandon, Anamaria Chediak, Ying Yi Chua, Bahaa Ghoussainy, Annika Haas, Jacobien de Korte, Nic Lehoux, Adam Rouse, Daniel Stauch, Lara Swimmer, and Amaury Wenger.
